Risk of Wildfires Remains Very High

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to take extra precautions outdoors as the risk of wildfires remains very high across the county.

The recent prolonged period of warm, dry weather has left grassland, heathland and woodland areas particularly vulnerable to fire. Even small heat sources, such as discarded cigarettes, disposable barbecues or campfires, can develop into significant incidents that spread rapidly, especially during hot, dry and windy weather.

That not only poses a risk to people, property, wildlife and the environment, it also places significant pressure on emergency services.

The Fire & Rescue Service is asking everyone to play their part in reducing the risk by:

• avoiding the use of disposable barbecues in open spaces
• taking litter home
• extinguishing smoking materials properly
• reporting any signs of fire immediately by calling 999.

Station Manager Matt Gamblen is West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Wildfires Tactical Advisor. He said: “Our firefighters are prepared to respond when fires break out, but preventing a fire taking hold in the first place is always the best approach. We are asking everyone to be extra vigilant when enjoying the countryside and open spaces this summer. By taking a few simple precautions, residents can help protect their communities, local wildlife and our firefighters.

“Here in West Sussex we’re not experiencing the same weather conditions or scale of wildfire activity currently being seen in parts of southern Europe. However, prolonged periods of hot, dry weather can increase the risk of grass, heathland and woodland fires locally.

“It only takes a small spark from a discarded cigarette, barbecue, campfire or machinery to ignite dry vegetation which can have devastating consequences.

“It’s not possible to predict exactly where or when a wildfire may occur, which is why we’re continually monitoring weather conditions and working closely with partners, including landowners and local authorities, to prepare for periods of increased risk.

“I encourage residents and visitors to take extra care outdoors, avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside, dispose of smoking materials responsibly and report any signs of fire immediately.”

Residents are also encouraged to avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation, and to keep garden waste clear of combustible materials.

Councillor Tracie Bangert, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire & Rescue at West Sussex County Council, said: "West Sussex is home to some beautiful countryside and open spaces that are enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the year. During periods of heightened wildfire risk, we all have a responsibility to help protect these areas.

"I would encourage everyone to follow the advice being shared by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and to think carefully about their actions when outdoors. Small steps can make a big difference in preventing fires and keeping our communities safe."

People can help prevent a fire breaking out by:

• Not using disposable barbecues in the countryside or on areas of dry grass.
• Avoiding campfires and open flames in open spaces.
• Properly extinguishing and disposing of smoking materials.
• Taking litter home, especially glass bottles which can focus sunlight and start a fire.
• Not parking vehicles on dry grass.
• Reporting fires or signs of fire immediately by calling 999.
